Board warns of IDOT road work shut down
State budget crisis spills over to major local road construction projects
JOLIET, IL- The Will County Board today called on residents to reach out to elected officials in Springfield and appeal for a funding solution to keep local state road projects from shutting down on July 1. IDOT has already notified contractors to secure construction zones by June 30 for a possible long-term shutdown. County projects will continue, though.
"The state budget impasse is affecting every corner of our lives," said Suzanne Hart (R-Naperville), chair of the legislative & policy committee. "Very important road projects will soon be halted, and taxpayers will be on the hook for the additional expenses associated with stopping the work. We are calling on all Will County residents to contact your representatives and senators in Springfield and tell them this is not acceptable."

There are approximately $2 billion of state transportation projects affected by the looming shutdown. Will County's projects are well over $100 million. The biggest one is 159th Street (Illinois 7/U.S. 6) from I-355 to U.S. 45 that totals $57 million. Others include I-55 at U.S. 6 in Channahon/Minooka; U.S. 30 from I-55 to Illinois 59 in Joliet/Plainfield; and Caton Farm Road/DuPage River bridge rehabilitation in Joliet.
"Infrastructure projects, specifically road improvements, are vitally important to a county like ours that continues to grow and develop," said Speaker Jim Moustis. "The state needs to find solutions to its budget problems and make good on its commitments to taxpayers. It's simply unacceptable that 25,000 construction jobs will cease to exist on July 1 because state officials refuse to work out their differences."
