Board reorganizes, elects Moustis as speaker
Maher elected Republican chair, Brooks elected Democratic chair
"It's very humbling that your board has enough confidence in you to lead them, and I am very appreciative of being elected speaker," said Speaker Moustis. "I look forward to working with everyone, and I feel very positive that we will get a lot accomplished. We will continue to make sure the county is appropriately funded so we can deliver services, while being fiscally conservative and staying within our means."
"It's an honor to serve in this leadership role, and it's always fun to be on the Board when you get new members because they bring new ideas and new energy," said Republican chair Maher. "Moving forward, it's my hope we will continue evaluating our comprehensive study and capital plan in order to keep our infrastructure up across the board."
Maher was initially elected to the Board in 2002. He previously chaired the capital improvements committee that drafted a master plan to address the county’s capital needs through 2030 by providing a road map to consolidate operations, improve the efficiency of resources, and better deliver services to residents. Over the long term, the plan is intended to save money and help the county maintain a solid financial rating.
"There are some very important issues still in front of us, and I am looking forward to working across the aisle to get those accomplished," said Democratic chair Brooks. "This is about the residents of Will County and what they are expecting from us. They want us to work together and manage their taxes in the best possible way."
Brooks was first elected to the Board in 2008. In 2012, he became the first African-American ever elected to head the Board. He has been the pastor of St. John Church in Joliet for the past 24 years. Brooks and his wife, Gwen, of 40 years are the parents of five children and nine grandchildren. He is a graduate of LaSalle University of Chicago with a Bachelor Degree in Business and John Marshall Law School with a certificate of completion in Social Law.
