Impact fee will fix roads, many over 50 years old

JOLIET—The Will County Board voted at their December meeting to move forward with a motor fuel tax to improve safety for motorists with repairs to aging roads, many of which are over 50 years old and built to support a county population that was less than half of what it is today.

“We are excited to improve safety on our roads,” said Will County Board Speaker Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet). “Our residents want and deserve improved shoulders and turn lanes, better traffic signals, and much needed road resurfacing.”

Will County Creates Special Fund for Cannabis

Fund will be used to address impact of state legalization

JOLIET—The Will County Board created a special fund to address the impact of legalization of Cannabis from cultivation to consumption at their December board meeting just before statewide legalization goes into effect in January. In 2018, the state of Illinois passed a law that legalizes the use of recreational marijuana.

“Starting January 1, 2020 cannabis use is legal in Illinois and we wanted to be ready for the impact that it will have on our communities,” said Will County Board Speaker Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet). “The board will take a hard look at what the needs in our communities are after legalization occurs and we’ll make sure that dollars are directed to those agencies.”

Winfrey Poised to Run for National Leadership Role

Will County stands to Benefit from National Exposure

JOLIET—The Will County Board today passed a resolution unanimously endorsing Speaker Denise Winfrey for the position as 2nd Vice President of NACo (National Association of Counties). NACo is the governing body for more than 3000 Counties in the United State. As 2nd Vice president, Winfrey would be in line to become the president of the association in 2022.

“I am honored to be running for this prestigious post of our national governing organization,” Winfrey said. “But most importantly, this position will cement Will County’s position as a national player. It is my goal to showcase all of the economic, cultural, and historic amenities that makes me proud to be a life-long resident of Will County.”
