Sherry Newquist Sworn In for District 1

11/21/2019

Steger resident to fill remainder of Summers’ County Board term

JOLIET--  At today's Will County Board Meeting, members approved the appointment of Sherry Newquist to the board's vacant position in District 1. The appointment comes after the previous representative of District 1, Laurie Summers of Crete, left her position earlier this year on the Board to take a new job.

Newquist was selected by the Will County Democratic Central Committee to serve the remainder of Summers’ term, as the party of the departing board member gets to select the replacement.

"We’re excited for Sherry to join us in our work on the County Board," said Board Speaker Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet). "I look forward to working with a full board to accomplish all of the important things that are expected of us by the residents of Will County."
Newquist has lived in eastern Will County since 1980 and has served as a Trustee for the Village of Steger, a Trustee on the Steger-SCH Library Board, and has been a Democratic Committeewoman since 2007.  Among her most proud accomplishments as a Steger Trustee was her work establishing a local ticket and court system for ordinance enforcement.

“I’m excited to start working on the Will County Board,” said Newquist. “My professional and personal experiences as a small business owner and village trustee, combined with my knowledge and commitment to eastern Will County will allow me to continue the representation that Laurie Summers has provided to the residents of District 1.”

Newquist will join Judy Ogalla (R-Monee) in representing District 1, which spans eastern Will County and includes the townships of Crete, Monee, Peotone, Washington, and Will. The next election for district 1 seats will be held in November 2022.

"I’d like to welcome Sherry to the board," said Republican minority leader Mike Fricilone (R-Homer Glen). "I look forward to working with her and getting to know her in the new year."
