Waste Management Presents Check to Will County

More than half a million after collaboration

JOLIET, IL – At this month's Will County Board meeting, a representative from Waste Management presented Will County Board leadership with a $650,000 host community benefit check for the Laraway Recycling and Disposal Facility Expansion.

"We've been working with Waste Management to find the best solution for the Laraway landfill for a while," said Democratic minority leader Herb Brooks (D-Joliet). "It's nice to have the expansion officially approved, and to receive this generous check. I want to give a big thanks to Waste Management for their continued support to District 8."

Waste Management began working with Will County in 2007 on a host agreement to take over the environmental remediation of the phosphogypsum stack at the site of the defunct Olin Chemical plant, in exchange for an expansion of the Laraway landfill.
After rounds of negotiations, the county and Waste Management of Illinois have reached final approval to add 95 acres to the existing 871-acre Laraway landfill. This expansion will add 15 years of disposal capacity to the site, and includes the environmental remediation of the Olin site.  According to the terms and conditions of the expansion, Waste Management also agreed to increase the per ton fees and surcharges paid to the county on contaminated soils accepted at the facility for bio-remediation or landfilling.

Under the host agreement negotiations, Waste Management agreed to make a one-time lump sum payment of $500,000 to Will County for various programs once the expansion reached final approval. An additional $150,000 is part of the five-year payment required under the host agreement.

"We are always trying to find revenue sources that keep tax rates down for Will County residents," said Chuck Maher (R-Naperville). "Our partnership with Waste Management is a great example of a public-private partnership that benefits all of Will County, and demonstrates that collaboration and careful planning pays off in the long run."

A large chunk of the check-- $50,000-- is specifically allocated for District 8, where the Laraway landfill is located. District 8 representatives Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet) and Herb Brooks will determine which non-profits and organizations will receive the allocated funds.

"We are excited to continue our relationship with Waste Management and look forward to the years to come," said Winfrey. "Not only will the Laraway expansion help the environment, it will improve the lives of those in the community."
The Will County Board has previously partnered with Waste Management on other taxpayer-saving green initiatives, such as in 2010 when the Will County Board approved and broke ground at the Prairie View Landfill to construct a renewable energy facility that essentially would recover and convert methane gas from the landfill into energy.

The Will County Board representatives for District 8 expect to announce which organizations will receive funds in the coming months.
